Rhode Island Accounting Requirements
A candidate must meet one of the following educational requirements:
1. 150-hour requirement
A candidate must have completed a minimum of 150 semester hours of general college education at the time of filing the examination application and comply with one of the following:

Earned a graduate degree with a concentration in accounting from a program that is accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the Board;

Earned a graduate degree from a program that is accredited in business by an accrediting agency recognized by the Board and completed a minimum of 15 semester hours in graduate level accounting courses or 24 semester hours in accounting at the undergraduate level;
- Earned a baccalaureate degree from a program accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the Board and completed a minimum of 24 semester hours of accounting at the undergraduate or graduate level and 24 semester hours of general business courses (other than accounting) at the undergraduate or graduate level;
The accounting course requirements must include each of the following areas: 6 semester hours in Fundamental Accounting, 6 semester hours in Intermediate Accounting, 3 semester hours in Tax Accounting, 3 semester hours in Auditing, 3 semester hours in Advanced Financial Accounting & Reporting. The business course requirements must include a minimum of 3 semester hours in Business Law and 3 semester hours in Economics.
2. 120-hour requirement
A candidate who does not meet the 150-hour education requirement may sit for the examination after July 1, 1999, if the candidate has, at the time of the application:
A) Completed not less than 120 semester hours in education, and
B) met one of the condition specified above under the 150-Hour Requirement.
A candidate who successfully passes the examination will not be eligible to receive a certificate until the candidate completes the 150-hour and the experience requirements.
All Candidates must met the educational requirements at the time of application. Official school transcripts and/or evaluations must be submitted at the time of application.
Candidates with foreign educational credentials must have their credentials evaluated by Foreign Academic Credential Services, Inc.
