Vermont Accounting Requirements

Examination candidates must have a minimum of 60 semester (90 quarter) hours of college credits of which includes; 30 semester (45 quarter) hours must be in accounting and business subjects as follows:

  • 6 semester (9 quarter) hours of financial accounting (may include managerial but not elementary);
  • 3 semester (4.5 quarter) hours of auditing;
  • 3 semester (4.5 quarter) hours of U.S. income tax;
  • 3 semester (4.5 quarter) hours of U.S. business law;
  • 3 semester (4.5 quarter) hours of computer science;
  • 3 semester (4.5 quarter) hours of business statistics;
  • 9 semester (13.5 quarter) hours of general business courses.

EFFECTIVE AUG 23, 2004
All candidates, first-time and re-examination, must provide documentation that they have completed U.S. Taxation and U.S. Business Law in order to sit for the examination.

Additional accounting, auditing, business, and other college level courses may be counted toward the total of 60 semester (90 quarter) hours required.

The courses must qualify for college credit at a two-year or four-year institution accredited by one of the six regional accrediting bodies (Middle State, New England, North Central, Northwest, Southern, and Western).

Initial candidates must submit to CPA Examination Services an official transcript (a photocopy is not acceptable) from each institution at which original credit toward the educational requirement has been earned. Transcript(s) may be submitted by candidates to CPA Examination Services at the time of application.

The Certificate of Enrollment must be completed by the academic institution(s) at which the student is enrolled and must confirm that all requirements in progress will be completed no later than 60 days following the actual date the application is received. After the educational requirements have been met, final official transcripts must be received by CPA Examination Services to document completion of educational requirements 120 days following the actual date the application was received.

Candidates who have completed educational requirements at institutions outside the U.S. must have their credentials evaluated by any member organization of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). Candidates should obtain evaluation request forms directly from the evaluating services. Evaluations may be submitted by candidates and must be postmarked to CPA Examination Services by the application deadline.

Note: Certified General Accountant Candidates from Canada who were previously exempt from this requirement ARE NOW REQUIRED to obtain an educational assessment by a foreign evaluation service. The deadline for the educational assessment is February 4, 2004.
