School Curriculum Directors

A curriculum director is generally a seasoned education employee – many with as much as ten years of experience before obtaining this job. They play a significant role in establishing educational guidelines and curriculums used within the school or the school district. They usually recruit and evaluate new staff members to ensure these individuals meet the goals and objects of the educational program. They often will establish (after fully designing, organizing, researching, and creating) a curriculum. They will then evaluate the efficiency and the overall success of the curriculum. This can include using metrics to determine if changes are necessary.

The median salary for school curriculum directors is $73,000 per year as of 2017 according to Payscale.com. This pay can increase to more than $100,000 per year with experience in some areas. Educational Coordinator

Individuals who wish to obtain a career that is educational but not in a traditional school environment may also benefit from a master’s degree in Education.

For example, those who work in a museum or zoo providing education to those who visit will often have a specialized educational degree. A master’s degree is generally necessary to hold these positions. These individuals tend to work in a role where they develop curriculum and programs for those who visit the location.

For example, they may work to develop an educational program for students visiting a zoo from a school. Their job often involves not only designing and implementing the educational programs but also distributing and teaching those who visit. Many organizations are also working on distance learning options where educational coordinators at aquariums or solariums provide video education to large groups of students across the country.

A museum, aquarium, zoo, or other educator will have a job that’s designed for their specific interests. Each location is very different in terms of what they will teach, who they will come in contact with, and the overall budgetary options available for educational programs. Payscale.com says that the median salary for those holding educational coordinator positions like this was $36,000 in 2016. The true charm here comes from being able to share a passion about a special interest or program. Still, this type of job is one that can be challenging to find for anyone without a specialized education.

Educational Consultant

Another career path option for those who obtain a graduate degree in Education is to work as an educational consultant, which is a very broad term. Individuals in this field tend to have a very specialized skill set. They have an in-depth knowledge of that area of study. They may also work as a teacher, but their goal is to implement more advanced programs within the educational environment.

For example, many in this position will have a specific area of focus such as STEM, academic intervention, improving drop-out rates, or working through blended learning. They work to provide guidance and advice within school districts, school buildings, or other educational programs. Many times, these educational programs require the consultant to work with administrators or other teachers. They will help in the area of creating policy and curriculum, outlining opportunities, spotting areas of concern, and offering solutions for current problems.

An educational consultant provides specialized understanding and skills for key problems within the educational environment. Ultimately, their goal is to implement educational initiatives that help to improve school and student performance.

The median salary for this position in 2016 was $62,428 per year according to Payscale.com. However, this is difficult to pinpoint. For example, some individuals in this field work as a teacher within the school and provide additional services and consultancy as well.

In other areas, they work as independent contractors or work for a school district and move from one school to the next providing educational resources and input. Some educational consultants make more than $168,000 a year to provide these services.

Corporate Opportunities

A Master of Education can serve in other areas besides education. Many times, individuals with this type of education are able to move into a corporate setting and offer a wide range of opportunities and benefits in the business world.

For example, a teacher with a focus on business management or administration may be able to work in a corporate environment providing instruction. Some work as adult educators training professionals in a variety of programs to enhance skills or to mold them into better workers. Some work as English as a Second Language (ESL) educators within the business world. The key here is to have an education that is specifically geared towards the industry you find most appealing.

Individuals who wish to move into a corporate position may also want to consider working as a consultant. They can provide educational training on a very specific area of focus for multiple companies.

For example, a tech-focused teacher can move from one business to the next helping to educate workers on using a specific type of technology or software program. As can be expected, the pay scale and overall outlook on these jobs range widely based on the type of work that is done and the overall goals of the individual. However, those with a master’s degree have more of an opportunity to mold their skills to fit within the corporate world.

For those seeking an opportunity to advance their career, move into another field, or do consultancy work, having a Master of Education is very important. It can even be critical to the overall success of that individual. While these educational paths may require a focus in a specific area, many times, they open the door to new opportunities.
