Academic Success Starts Early: Tools and Resources for the First Year

The transition to college — whether coming straight from high school, transferring from another institution, or returning after time away — brings new levels of academic responsibility and independence.

Each semester shapes a student’s college experience, especially the first one at a new campus. The good news is, no one has to figure it out alone.

Encouraging Confidence and Connection

As a parent or family member, you play a powerful role in your student’s academic success — even from a distance. One of the best ways to help? Encourage them to seek support early and often. Sometimes students are reluctant to seek assistance, particularly if they have not required support in the past.  But in college, utilizing resources is a sign of strength, not struggle.

Here are some key services to remind your student about:

  • Academic Advising: Advisors help students choose classes, plan majors, and stay on track for graduation.
  • Center for Academic Success: Tutoring and writing services are offered in this nonjudgmental space to strengthen skills and boost confidence.
  • Traurig Library: There are a wealth of services to found here. Library staff can offer help with research, citations, and study tools.  Students will also find quiet spots where they can study and focus on assignments.

Ask your student if they’ve visited any of these yet — or suggest they do so in their first few weeks.

Students who build good academic habits in their first semester are more likely to thrive throughout college. Help your student see these resources not as a backup plan — but as part of their foundation for success. Want to explore these services with your student?  Visit the First-Year Experience.

Health Services: Stay Prepared for Fall Semester

With the fall semester approaching, it is a great time to make sure that your students are up to date with immunizations and vaccines. Their health form should also be on file with the University’s Health Services. If your student needs to complete the Student Health Form , that form and other important information about the Health Services can be found here.

168 Student-Athletes Named to 2025 CACC Spring Honor Roll

The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Academic Honor Roll for Spring 2025 came out and saw a total of 168 student-athletes from Post University who compete within the CACC honored on the list with qualifying grade point averages ranging from a 3.0 to a perfect 4.0 GPA during the spring semester. In the Fall edition of the CACC Honor Roll, 166 student-athletes made the list from Post.

Remind your student about the value of scholarships

If you need a reason to encourage your student to look for scholarships, here are two strong reasons.

  1. Scholarships help students have more time to focus on their studies. Research shows that work can take up more than 15 hours per week and becomes an obstacle to academic success. For many students, the stresses of working make it difficult for them to graduate on time, or graduate with the high grades they have the potential to achieve.
  2. Scholarships can fill the gap.  Scholarship assistance can support students who fall in the gap between high and low-income levels — students who may not qualify for a need-based scholarship and who do not meet the criteria for a merit-based scholarship.

We launched a new partnership with Scholarships360 to support our students in their academic journey.  Founded in 2010, Scholarships360 has a database of over 5,000 scholarships. Through Scholarships360, students can now access external scholarship opportunities that are personalized to their unique needs and their academic goals.  Encourage your student to set up an account with their student email account.
