Celebrating Identity: Your Rights and Resources at Post University
Post University is committed to creating an inclusive environment where every student can express their authentic gender identity with dignity and respect. This February, we’re highlighting important resources and policies designed to support all members of our campus community.
Your Right to Chosen Names and Pronouns: Students have the right to identify themselves with a chosen first name rather than their legal name in most campus settings. Chosen names can be used in classes, on identification cards, and in email addresses, helping you feel comfortable and recognized throughout your academic journey. While legal names may still be required for official documents like transcripts, financial aid, employment records, and insurance documentation, we strive to use your chosen name whenever possible.
Simple Steps to Update Your Information: Updating your chosen name and email address is straightforward—simply complete the Chosen Name and Email Change Form available through student services. For assistance with this process, contact: Barbara Alenckis, Director of Title IX and Disability Services, at 203.596.6027.
Adding Pronouns to Your Email Signature: One easy way to share your pronouns with the campus community is by adding them to your Outlook email signature. This helps create respectful communication and reduces assumptions about gender identity. Microsoft’s support guide provides step-by-step instructions for customizing your signature.
Safe Spaces and Housing Options: Most Post University buildings feature unisex and single-occupancy bathrooms, and students may choose facilities that align with their gender identity. Additionally, transgender students can select housing options based on their gender identity. For housing assistance, contact Residence Life at 203.596.4540.
Legal Support Resources: Students seeking additional support can access resources like SOAR (Student Online Assistance Resource), Lambda Legal, TLDEF’s Name Change Project, and The National LGBTQ+ Bar Association for legal guidance and advocacy.
