Understanding Consent

Brought to you by Title IX and Disability Services

Consent is an ongoing, clear, and voluntary agreement to engage in sexual activity. It must be freely given—meaning someone underage, intoxicated, unconscious, or under coercion cannot consent. Consent should be enthusiastic, with a focus on a clear “yes” rather than the absence of a “no.” It must be reaffirmed throughout any encounter—agreeing to one act does not imply agreement to others or future activities. Consent can be withdrawn at any time, and non-verbal cues can also signal discomfort.

Respecting boundaries and communicating openly ensures that all parties feel safe and respected.
