Title IX and You: Be an Active Bystander
Shared by Rachel Powell, Senior Title IX and Disability Services Coordinator
Title IX protects students from sex-based discrimination, including sexual harassment and assault. Building a community free from such discrimination requires a collective effort, and every member of our campus community can contribute by becoming an active bystander.
What You Can Do:
Bystander intervention involves recognizing a potentially harmful situation and taking action.
Three methods can help:
- Direct: If safe, address the behavior directly. Tell the harasser their actions are unacceptable. Check in with the person targeted, offering support.
- Distract: If direct intervention feels risky, create a distraction. Interrupt the interaction, change the subject, or enlist a friend to help.
- Delegate: In situations involving potential violence or serious misconduct, contact campus security, the police, the Title IX office, or a Resident Advisor (RA).
Prioritize Your Safety:
Choose the method that feels safest and most appropriate for the situation. Even small actions can make a difference. By intervening, you contribute to a safer campus.
