Study Smarter: Tricks for Everyone

Shared by Rachel Powell, Senior Title IX and Disability Services Coordinator

Effective studying is crucial, but traditional methods aren’t always ideal. Here are some alternative techniques, especially helpful for individuals with disabilities, but beneficial for all learners:

  • Assistive Technology: Use technology to personalize learning. Text-to-speech, screen readers, speech recognition. Adjust font sizes, use high-contrast displays, and explore alternative input devices. Here is our link to Assistive Technology: https://post.edu/student-services/disability-services/assistive-technology/
  • Chunking: Break down large tasks or complex concepts into smaller, manageable chunks. Use outlines, flashcards, or concise notes.
  • Active Recall: Actively retrieve information instead of passively rereading. Use flashcards, quizzes, or teach the material to someone else.
  • Supportive Environment: Create a comfortable study space. Consider flexible locations, like the library, coffee shop, or even outside. Incorporating mindfulness or relaxation techniques can further enhance concentration and manage study-related stress.

Thanking our Hearts:

Our hearts are working all day and night for us, and we rarely give it any attention. Place your awareness on your heart region as you breathe naturally. Smile inwardly at your heart. Acknowledge your heart on the inhale, saying, “I see you.” And then express gratitude to your heart on the exhale, saying, “Thank you.” Repeat this five times.

May this remind you to set aside time in your day for a quick and easy centering. By turning our attention to our inner self, we can see that attention builds awareness. Awareness precedes transformation.
