“It’s Okay Not to Be Okay”:  A Conversation with Ivy Watts

On Monday, September 16, former All-American Division II Track & Field athlete and a Somatic coach Ivy Watts spoke with Post student-athletes about her journey in prioritizing mental health and breaking the stigma around seeking support. Ivy shared how, during her athletic career, she once believed her performance defined her worth, until she realized the importance of caring for her mental well-being.

She reminded students that mental health is not linear. We all experience the highest highs and the lowest lows, and that it’s okay to have off days. Ivy encouraged athletes to develop their own self-care strategies, practice positive self-talk, and take advantage of both on-campus and community resources. She emphasized that striving for perfection can come at the cost of one’s mental health, and true success is rooted in balance and self-compassion.

Through tools like Emotional Freedom Tapping (EFT), acts of kindness, and intentional breaks from running on “auto-pilot,” Ivy showed how small, mindful practices can help prevent burnout and make progress feel more meaningful. Her message reminded student-athletes that choosing self-care is a sign of strength. She left our community inspired to speak their truths, embrace self-love, and keep moving forward with resilience.
