Avery Abate, a student in the University’s Pathways Program, is gaining recognition for her inspiring poem on positive unity—a theme that embodies the spirit of inclusivity and support at Post. Her poem, recognized for its compelling message, was featured at the Shades of Love Spoken Word event, hosted by the Black Student Union earlier this week as part of Black History Month programming.

“I was really happy to have my poem selected,” said Avery, a Shelton resident, who joined Post this past fall. Avery, who enjoys spending time with her friends and teachers, also takes part in campus activities—from cheering at athletic games to savoring the meals prepared by the dining hall chefs.  She is photographed with University Pathways Program Chair Alyssa Pagano.

Her 205-word poem celebrates the strength found in diversity and connection, emphasizing that positive unity fosters success, empowerment, and well-being. In her poem, Avery writes how students can uplift and inspire one another:

“Positive unity connects you to new people. Positive unity means a network of different kinds of people.”

“Positive unity is about a healthy, successful, and happy life. We are a successful group of students at Post University where positive unity helps us connect, and achieve great things.

The University Pathways Program at Post University is a transition program designed for students ages 17–22 with diverse learning needs. Offered in partnership with EdAdvance, a regional educational service center, the program reflects Post University’s commitment to fostering a culture of respect, collaboration, and shared success.

Avery’s poem reminds us that unity and positivity are not just ideals—they are practices that build stronger communities and enrich lives.  Post University proudly celebrates voices that inspire change and unite people.
