CIS Bachelor’s Degree FAQs

What is a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems?

A BS in Computer Information Systems is geared towards computer system applications in management situations and explores global and local trends in the IS/IT world right now, with an eye out for what is to come. This discipline emphasizes information and views technology as an instrument for generating, processing, and distributing information. Professionals in the discipline are primarily concerned with the information that computer systems can provide to aid an enterprise in defining and achieving its goals, and the processes that an enterprise can implement or improve using information technology.

Is CIS a good degree?

If you are inspired by computer science and technology and you would like to pursue a solutions-focused IT future, then a computer information systems degree is a good degree to consider.

What’s the difference between “CIS” and “CS”?

Computer Information Systems (CIS) focuses on integrating information technology solutions and business processes to meet the information needs of businesses and other enterprises, enabling them to achieve their objectives in an effective, efficient way. This discipline’s perspective on information technology emphasizes information and views technology as an instrument for generating, processing, and distributing information.

Computer Science (CS) emphasizes the study of the theory, design, implementation, and performance of computers and computer software, including the study of computability and of computation itself. Computer science spans the range from theory to hands-on programming, offering a comprehensive foundation that could help graduates adapt to new technologies and new ideas. The field covers everything from theoretical and algorithmic foundations to cutting-edge developments in robotics, computer vision, intelligent systems, and bioinformatics.

I have a few IT certifications and college credits, can I get any prerequisites waived?

Yes, Post University allows for credit consideration of work experience. However, if your work in the industry overlaps with a significant portion of the content of one of the required courses in your degree or certificate, then you will need to ask your CIS department chair to see if you can replace that course with another CIS course. This is considered a substitution and would be approved based on University policy and guidelines.
