Big Data 

The concentration in big data focuses on learning and developing programming-based solutions for storing, mining, cleaning, filtering, and, ultimately, analyzing large volumes of data. 

Interdisciplinary Studies 

Under department advisement, this concentration lets students design a unique program of study that crosses disciplinary boundaries with 12 credit hours in relevant studies from other disciplines. 

Following the core coursework, you will be required to complete an independent study project or internship. 

Sample Courses

Introduction to Information Technology

This course is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of information technology. Students have the opportunity to gain practical knowledge of information technology systems and the different frameworks in which IT is managed in business. Topics include cybersecurity, computer architecture and organization, application platforms, database management, web technologies, and network configurations. In addition, the course examines the history of information technology and its impact on society. Upon completion of this course, students could be prepared to take the CompTIA IT Fundamentals+ certification exam.

Python Programming

This course provides the opportunity to equip a motivated student with little or no prior programming experience with a working knowledge of the Python programming language and the Pandas package for descriptive data analytics and library functions. Covers data types, control structures, functions, parameter passing, library functions, arrays, inheritance, and object-oriented design. This course will provide a pragmatic and hands-on introduction to the Python programming language, with a focus on practical applications and lab activities, rather than theoretical topics.

Data Structure and Algorithms

This course will apply advanced programming techniques to a fundamental understanding of solving complex algorithmic problems. The course will cover analysis of algorithms, arrays, vectors, linked-lists, stacks, queues, priority queues, trees, traversal searches, binary trees, sorting, graphs, and hashing.

Time Series & Econometrics

This course begins with simple linear regression and builds to time series analysis, stationary and non-stationary models, models for estimation, seasonality, and structural breaks. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of empirical research and the steps involved in conducting and using the learned strategies to complete an empirical research project.
