Extending Education Outside the Classroom

In the John P. Burke School of Public Service and Education, we proudly explore opportunities to help students gain the skills and insights they need as they seek to make a real difference in their communities.

Burke Celebration Month

First launched in 2019, the school chose November—John P. Burke’s birth month—to host a month-long celebration of Burke’s legacy of community engagement and service to others. Now, every November gives us the opportunity to honor this rich legacy with scholarly presentations, special events, and contests, including:

The Burke Values Essay Competition

Open to all active Post students, this essay contest requires the submission of a 1-to-2 page essay (400 – 800 words total) highlighting at least one of the Burke School Values (listed on the Entry Form). Winning essays are awarded a Certificate of Excellence and a gift card.

The Dinner with the Dean Networking Series

In the spirit of developing professional networks, encouraging quality interpersonal engagement, and recognizing exceptional student potential, students are invited to apply to participate in The Dinner with the Dean Networking Series. Based on their applications, the Dean selects three student honorees for dinner (in-person or virtual).

The John P. Burke Community Hero Award

Since 2020, this annual award serves to recognize an individual, group, or organization whose outstanding community/public service-oriented work aligns with the Burke values and continues his legacy of service to others. The recipient of this annual award is notified each November. There is no application process.
